“Black Blue – White, A Journey into the Charedi Society in Israel” by Haim Zicherman is one of the best books about haredi society on the market. The only problem for people interest is that the book is only available in Hebrew. In Israel we have great books about religion, politics or the army but, unfortunately, these books are never being translated into English. I have no explanation why because an English translation would find more readers and inform the world of what is really going on in Israel.
Haim Zicherman has a litvishe background and this may be the reason why he mostly refers to the litvishe world. Nevertheless, it is an interesting read. Even for people who are already familiar with the subject or even Haredim themselves. The author writes about the haredi school system, Shidduchim, Anusim, the daily life and he also goes briefly into the competition between Rabbi Steinman in Bnei Brak and Rabbi Auerbach in Jerusalem. What I didn’t know was the difference between Slobodka and Novhardok.
Everyone should read this book but, as I said, this is impossible, as it is only available in Hebrew. Nevertheless, in the course of time, I will refer to a couple of facts given in the book.
The book has approx. 350 pages and the Jerusalem TAMIR bookstore offers it for 58 Shekels.
