This week’s Parasha is CHAYEI SARAH. In this Parasha, the Torah teaches that Avraham’s wife Sarah died at the age of 127 years and was buried in the Ma’arat HaMachpela cave in Hebron. The place where already Adam and Eve (Chava) are buried.
Avraham bought the property from the Ephron, the Hittite and buried his wife. All forefathers are buried in the Machpelah as well as all foremothers except for Rachel who is buried outside Bethlehem (Beit Lechem).
Every year when we read the Torah Parasha CHAYEI SARAH, thousands of Jews are gathering around the Ma’arat HaMachpelah in Hebron. Many already arrive on the Thursday before Shabbat Chayei Sarah. The lucky ones manage to have private accommodation but a lot of people bring tents and sleep outside.
This year, staying in Hebron must be even harder due to the security situation. Only a small part of Hebron is Jewish but 3 /4 are under Palestinian control. Jews are forbidden to enter the Arab part but Arabs, on the other hand, are allowed to walk through the Jewish part of town. Jews entering the Arab part would get killed right away by Palestinians but Arabs are free passing the Jewish part.
