Last night I heard that the international media is, once again, bashing Israel and twisting facts. This time it is about Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) and Israel being falsely accused of forcing Palestinian shopkeepers to close their businesses.
Every year on Yom Yerushalayim, the famous March of the Flags or also called Dance with the Flags is taking place. The parade usually starts at Sacher Park, walks up Bezalel Sreet, then down King George until the gates of the Old City. The final destination is the Kotel (Western Wall) and, for quite some time, the route has been leading through the Muslim Old City Quarter.
This year, the Palestinians complained because they see Israeli flags as something evil. On the other hand, when it comes to Hamas flags, we Jewish Jerusalem residents are being confronted with them all the time. The Muslim Quarter is full of Hamas flags and graffiti. As soon as it comes to something Jewish, Palestinians feel bothered.
Another reason why Palestinians complained was the fact that national religious participants in the parade scream anti – Arab slogans or even try beating up Palestinian pedestrians. This is true sometimes but, on the other hand, who is complaining about Arab residents attacking Jews and even kill them ?
In the end, Israel’s Supreme Court allowed the parade passing through the Muslim Quarter but … And this is where the foreign media is hiding facts from you:
On a daily basis, Arab shopkeepers and restaurant owners around the Damascus Gate area like to close early. Apparently they like to go home and many times close their businesses at 6 or 7 pm. That’s very normal.
When the parade participants were gathering in front of the Great Synagogue in King George at 5 pm, they were told that everybody has to stay there and the parade only continues walking down to the Old City at 7 pm. A time when Arabs shops are usually closed.
Not the Palestinians were blocked but the Jewish participants of the Flag Parade. The Arabs were free to close their businesses as usual and walk home whereas the Jewish celebrations were stuck in King George instead of continuing straight to the Kotel.
However, I went to the celebrations in King George and made two videos. Enjoy !
