The very first rain after a a long and very hot Israeli summer is called YOREH. I cannot really say anything about the origin of this word. My guess is the Torah. The most used name for RAIN is GESHEM. However, there is also MATAR, as we know from the SHEMA.
In 2016, we didn’t see any rain from the beginning of April until last Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon, it really started to rain in Jerusalem.
The first rain YOREH is always part of the Israeli TV news because it is very exciting:
In Beersheva as well as at the coast, the YOREH came with a huge dust cloud. It is still warm and dry until Wednesday. Then, temperature is going down and the forecast is predicting heavy rain showers.
